A Note of Thanks from the Outgoing Treasurer
I thank God for giving me an opportunity to be a part of OFUESI-USA since its inception. I never felt like it was a new entity, but always felt like it was an extension of UESI– ‘the school of discipleship,’ which has discipled me as a ‘follower of Jesus’ from my student days. With all excitement, I attended the first Committee Meeting at the Mondithokas in La Mirada, California on May 29, 1999. Four graduates met with not just meager beginnings, but absolutely nothing – zero down. Along with the other activities that were planned, one of the main objectives was to raise financial support for UESI-India. We congregated for the First Regional Fellowship Meeting in San Jose under the banner of “Overseas Friends of Union of Evangelical Students of India – California Region.” Later, God brought along other graduates, and a National Council was formed with eight members across the United States. The Council met for the first time on July 29, 2000, and we renamed the organization as Overseas Friends of UESI-USA.

I was assigned the responsibility of the treasurer both on the Regional Committee and on the National Council, because of my background as a bank employee.

One of our objectives was to support UESI-India. Since we did not have a tax-deductible status, when we started, we routed all donations through DM Stearns. The very first year (for 11 months) our support was about $ 9,650, which increased marginally to $ 11,000 (for next 10 months), and then to $ 18,815 (next 17 months). A positive line graph reflected God’s faithfulness to our graduates. By beginning of 2003, we were registered as a Non-Profit Organization and had our own bank account was opened on January 15, 2003 with an initial deposit of $ 100. In the year 2003, we had received donations of $ 50,707; in 2004 it increased to $ 55,490 and in 2005 we are at $ 40,000 (by November first week).

Though the numbers are not everything, it does prove God’s faithfulness to His children. Just to share my testimony, in 2003 in the month of December I was depositing the checks received till then. I realized that the total was about $48,000; a passing thought on my mind at that time was, ‘I wish we had reached $50,000.’ Within couple of days two more checks arrived, crossing that intriguing figure.

In December 2004, as I was posting the checks, I saw the number of donors to be about 46 (which was only 36 in 2003), and I wished we would cross 50, and now we did this year. Time and again God has reminded me that His faithfulness will never fail. Furthermore, these instances encouraged me a lot because of the motivation that I received from our graduates who enclosed little notes, and sometimes long letters, sharing what UESI meant to them, how they always want to be a part of this ministry, and how they appreciated my continued involvement.

Also one great desire and concern shared by many of us was to see that our staff workers in India get their full pay checks on time (which was not true till 2003). We expressed this need to the UESI-India several times and for the past two years they have implemented this policy. This has been a milestone, in the UESI history. Many sacrifices have been made by those whom God has called to be a part of this great movement. We who have been blessed by their sacrifices and now we have an opportunity to be a part of this great movement.

I sincerely thank God and every graduate who has been a part of God’s great plan in this ministry. As I step down from the post of the treasurer, I pray that God’s direction would be with Bro. Daniel Gera as he serves as OFUESI-USA’s treasurer from January, 2006.

Expectations from the book of PROVERBS
Prem and Amy Saganti
The book of Proverbs is a package of wisdom for mankind, as Christians when we study this book, it teaches, trains, and transforms us with wisdom. May our Lord help us to seek and find such wisdom in our personal and corporate lives!

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)

We all can testify that our God is a ‘God of specifics’. He cares for me as much as He provides to you. He answers my prayers as much as he listens to your praises. He corrects me as much as He leads you carefully. We are all called to be His children individually and He showered His grace on us personally. By His grace we are dwelling in His love and we can certainly recall how He continued to love us in spite of our repeated failures.

One of the fascinating things in the book of Proverbs is the ‘specific identification’, we read “six things the Lord hates and seven are abomination.”

Proverbs 6: 16-19 (NIV)Proverbs 6: 16-19 (KJV)
16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

In this passage (Proverbs 6: 16-19) we see a top-to-bottom identification of our own personality: eyes, tongue, heart, hands, feet, false-witness, and discard among brothers. Where we stand today in the context of our preparedness for His ministry in our personal lives? From the book of proverbs we also see the expectations of these very expected traits and as committed workers for His glory and may we work faithfully to achieve these expectations.

  • Abomination: “A Proud Look” (v.17)
Expectation - Eyes of humility: When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom (Proverbs 11:2)
  • Abomination: “A Lying Tongue” (v.17)
Expectation - A Tongue of truth: My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness (Proverbs 8:7)
  • Abomination: “Hands that shed innocent blood” (v.17)
Expectation - Hands of honest work: One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys (Proverbs 18:9)
  • Abomination: “A heart that devices wicked plans” (v.18)
Expectation - A good heart: My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways (Proverbs 23:26)
  • Abomination: “Feet that are swift in running to evil” (v.18)
Expectation - Feet of caution: Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men. (Proverbs 4:14)
  • Abomination: “A false witness who speaks lies” (v. 19)
Expectation - Advocates for justice and mercy: A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies. (Proverbs 12:17)
  • Abomination: “The one who sows discord among brothers” (v. 19)
Expectation - Cultivators of peaceful relationships: Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife (Proverbs 26:20-21)

In 1985, Prakash Yesudian who was associated with our UESI ministries for several decades presented a profound truth while visiting with the EU students in Vizag. His illustration is from the English alphabet letters – “I” and “C”. The letter “I” always looks as if standing firm and proud. The letter “C” is always curved and looks bent expressing humility. If we follow Christ, we all need this kind of transformation from I to C, perhaps from “me” to “Christ” in our attitudes and personality. May our God help us in this accordingly!
